Courtney House

Courteney House is a one-off, award-winning eco house on the edge of the world heritage city of Bath in Somerset. The project required clever setting out, capitalising on the hillside setting, creating new terraces and garden rooms that create a seamless connection between the exterior and interior spaces. The design and material palette complements the Arts and Crafts style of the house, while providing contemporary external living spaces.

The garden wall and lychgate to the front separate the parking and garage from a new south-facing courtyard and external kitchen area.
A mix of yorkstone, dutch pavers and compacted gravel defines and frames the different areas.

To the rear, a series of terraces provide immediate dining and entertaining space, while a secluded terrace creates a space for external working and meetings. A small potager steps up to a potting shed and provides ample food growing space for the family.

The garden required considerable hard landscaping as it was designed to be spread over a succession of descending terraces. Planting frames the living spaces and provides depth, borrowing views from the surrounding landscape to give the illusion of a bigger footprint to the site.

Architectural and colourful plants were specified and sourced to add colour and interest all year round.
